Summary

Social Networks and Social Integration

Theresa Kuchler and Johannes Stroebel will be visiting CES for the 2022/23 academic year while on their sabbaticals. They are planning to work on a number of projects studying social networks, broadly speaking. For example, they are anticipating to further develop their research on the social integration of Syrian refugees in Germany. In addition, they hope to expand their recent research on the determinants and effects of social capital beyond the United States, starting with an effort to measure the geography of social capital around the world. Beyond these ongoing research projects, both researchers are looking forward to exploring new lines of research with Munich-based scholars.
In addition to their academic research, they are hoping to use their time in Munich to further develop the activities of the CESifo research cluster on “Economic Research with Firm Data” (https://www.cesifo.org/en/cesifo-cluster). They will each be giving keynote lectures as well at the CESifo/ifo Junior Workshop on Big Data.
Mr. Stroebel and Ms. Kuchler are also planning to teach a short PhD course at CES. Theresa Kuchler’s course will focus on empirical household finance and Johannes Stroebel’s course on empirical work with social network data. These courses will both present an overview of some of the latest research in these fields as well as provide PhD students with insights into the process of working with large-scale data sets from the private and public sectors.
Theresa Kuchler is an Associate Professor of Finance at New York University's Stern School of Business in New York City. She earned a PhD in Economics at Stanford University. Prior to attending Stanford, she received a diploma in Business Economics from the University of Mannheim and spent a year as a Fulbright visiting student in the Economics department at UC Berkeley. She is a CESifo Research Fellow.
Johannes Stroebel is the David S. Loeb Professor of Finance at NYU’s Stern School of Business. He holds a BA (first class honors) from Oxford University (Merton College) and a PhD from Stanford University. He is an NBER Research Associate, a CEPR Research Affiliate and a CESifo Research Fellow.
