Summary
Multinational Companies, Trade Policies and Climate Change
In his research, Haishi “Harry” Li examines, both quantitatively and empirically, how economic shocks and climate disasters impact the international economy and what policy measures countries should take in order to deal with them. In one of his ongoing projects, he studies the role of multinational companies in the “Great Collapse” of international trade and the cross-border propagation of shocks during the Great Recession of 2008. Another research project focuses on the supply-chain effects of tariffs and their aggregate employment consequences in the context of Brazil. His research also examines the impact that climate disasters and climate change risks have on the macroeconomic and financial performance of a country’s trading partners. He recently studied the optimal tariffs that Western allies should impose on Russia (for its invasion of Ukraine), as countries trade off the economic damage to Russia and the loss of domestic welfare.
In addition to pursuing these projects, Mr. Li plans to exchange ideas and develop new projects with local scholars during his visit to CES. His research interests span different areas of international economics. He will be visiting CES in January and February of 2023.
Harry Li is an Assistant Professor of Economics at the University of Hong Kong. Previously he was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California San Diego. He received his PhD in Economics from the University of Chicago.
