Summary

Labor and Family Economics

While visiting CESifo, Anna Raute will work on a project that investigates the role of firm policies, in particular childcare facilities provided by firms, on mothers' career paths after birth. Furthermore, going beyond the effects on workers, she evaluates the potential costs and benefits for firms of adopting family-friendly policies. In a second project, Ms. Raute investigates the effectiveness of gender-specific hiring subsidies introduced in Italy in 2013 at reducing gender differences in employment at the firm level. She and her co-authors estimate the dynamic effect of the subsidy on firm outcomes, focusing in particular on their hiring decisions, and explore whether the subsidy permits firms to learn about potential productivity of disadvantaged workers. She will also work on a project studying the impact of violence against women during World War II on long-term political and social attitudes as well as female labor market outcomes.

Ms. Raute’s primary teaching and research fields are Labor and Family Economics. Much of her work has a strong public policy focus and draws on various large-scale administrative data. At CESifo, she is especially looking forward to interact with researchers working on social policies, human capital, and gender-biased violence. She also hopes to foster future collaboration with researchers at the Centre for Macroeconomics and Surveys.

Dr. Anna Raute is a Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) in Economics at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL): prior to joining QMUL she was Assistant Professor at the University of Mannheim and received her PhD from University College London. Her research on parental leave has been awarded various research awards, including the CESifo Distinguished Affiliate Award. She is a Research Affiliate in the CESifo Network and at CEPR, a Research Fellow at the Centre for Research and Analysis of Migration (CReAM) and a Research Associate at ZEW. She is a council member of the European Economic Association (EEA) and Executive Committee member of the European Association of Labour Economists (EALE).
