Summary

Labor Market Integration and Innovation

During her stay at CES, Federica Coelli plans to advance work investigating the role of the European integration process on Europe’s innovation landscape, particularly focusing on how reduced labor mobility costs through labor market integration facilitate knowledge spillovers, inventor networking, and knowledge creation. She will continue studying the relationship between local economic booms and regional innovation capacity, aiming to understand the roles of agglomeration economies and opportunity costs in determining a region’s responsiveness to economic shocks, thereby informing debates on the efficacy of place-based policies.

Ms. Coelli’s research focuses on the interplay among economic growth, innovation and international trade. Her work investigates the mechanisms driving knowledge creation and diffusion, examining how factors like international trade policy, market integration, and local economic conditions shape investment in innovation and knowledge production.

Federica Coelli is Principal Research Economist at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) – Office of the Chief Economist (OCE), and a CEPR Research Affiliate. Before joining EBRD, she was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Zurich, Department of Economics, and worked for the International Monetary Fund, Research Department.
