Summary

“The Economics of Science and Innovation”

During his visit, Christoph Carnehl will offer three CES Lectures on “The Economics of Science and Innovation,” highlighting the specific features of knowledge production and bringing together recent theoretical and empirical insights. The course will cover the economic properties of knowledge, the incentives shaping research in academia and industry, and introduce participants to a tractable model of search on complex epistemic landscapes that allows generating rich insights into innovation and scientific research.

Mr. Carnehl’s work studies how incentives shape the production of knowledge and technological progress, with a particular focus on the organization of research and the dynamics of scientific discovery. A central theme of his research is to model discovery as a process of search in complex environments.

Christoph Carnehl is an Assistant Professor of Economics at Bocconi University, whose research lies at the intersection of microeconomic theory, industrial organization, and the economics of science and innovation. He obtained his PhD in Economics in 2017 from the University of Mannheim.
