Summary
Price and wage setting
Recent work by Almut Balleer centers around the question of how financial constraints affect the price and wage setting of firms. Price setting relates to nominal rigidities and inflation dynamics; the interaction of price setting and financial constraints is, therefore, relevant for economic and monetary policy. Wage setting uncovers the underlying mechanisms of how financial constraints affect unemployment and is, at the same time, an important determinant of income inequality in the economy.
Ms Balleer’s research fields are macroeconomics, applied research in econometrics and labor economics. Amongst other things, in her research she has examined the role of technological progress and human resources for economic fluctuations in working hours, employment and unemployment. New projects include an evaluation of economic stabilization policy, in particular for short-time work, as well as the effect of financial market frictions on price and employment adjustments of firms.
Almut Balleer has been a Professor of Empirical Economic Research in the School of Business and Economics at RWTH Aachen University since September 2012. She earned her doctoral degree from the University of Bonn, also visiting the Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona on a Marie Curie research grant from the European Doctoral Program. In 2009, she became Assistant Professor at the Institute for International Economic Studies (IIES) at Stockholm University and has been Research Affiliate there since 2015. She is also a CESifo Research Network Fellow, a Research Professor at the ifo Center for Macroeconomics and Surveys as well as a Research Affiliate at the Center for Economic Policy Research (CEPR).
