Summary

Dynamic Competitive Effects in Concentrated Markets

Ralph Siebert empirically evaluates competitiveness and industry dynamics in high-tech industries. Over the last few decades, many industries have become increasingly concentrated such that competition takes place among few large firms. Entry costs, economies of scale and learning by doing make it more difficult for new firms to enter. One well-explored short-run implication is that highly concentrated markets can harm competition and increase prices. Little attention has been devoted to dynamic market effects such as the impact on new product introduction, product variety and adoption of new technologies. Mr Siebert is also examining the pharmaceutical industry, empirically evaluating the extent to which bargaining abilities and competition affect drug prices.

Ralph Siebert’ research is in the area of industrial organisation, econometrics, urban economics, experimental economics and microeconomics. His work is grounded in the interface between applied theory and empirical testing, i.e., structural modelling. The investigation of the competitiveness of firms with respect to dynamic strategic behaviour forms the centre of his work. His studies primarily focus on the following topics: strategic alliances (mergers, joint ventures, licensing) multi-product competition and product differentiation, innovation, industry and firm dynamics (evolution of industries, learning by doing). His areas of expertise include the semiconductor industry, the pharmaceutical industry and the housing market.

Mr Siebert is a CESifo Research Network Fellow and will be visiting CES from November until December 2018. During his research visit, he will be working on two empirical research projects.

Ralph Siebert is a Full Professor of Economics at Purdue University. He also teaches MBA courses at the University of Chicago. His doctorate in Economics is from Humboldt University. He has published various studies in top journals and received multiple teaching and research awards. In addition, he has experience in business consulting and expert witness services.
